The book that I enjoyed the most was Jermaine’s, specifically his portrait section. I really liked his close ups that he did. The lens and camera had such amazing sharpness you could see every detail in their faces as well as all the details in the sand.I don’t know if he used filters in Photoshop or not but the images colors were so vibrant and beautiful. I also really liked his pictures of them surfing the actual waves. The line of the waves in the frame worked really well for his book. I also enjoyed Bates artwork in his book. He definitely has his own unique style with his artwork and he almost reminds me of a modern day Picasso with his face structures. Overall all the books were good though.
my book
•December 2, 2009 • Leave a Commentso as i started putting my book together i noticed that it definitly wasn’t turning out how I had planned. Initially i was trying to show a day in the life through my eyes but you were supposed to relate it to your life, however when it came down to putting it together i didn’t really like any of the pictures with people in them and i decided to stick with a more nature only book. I called it HumanNature becuase I was trying to mix humans with nature and also show how man-made things look like things made in nature; for example, the picture of a tree that has a crack down it and the road with a crack down it . All in all i was really please with how my book turned out, but if i were to do it again i would like to try to get some photos of mammoth in the winter compared to the dead fall colors that it portrayed. here are some of the pics that made it
Collier Schorr
•November 18, 2009 • Leave a CommentWhat I liked about Collier is that even thought her photographs weren’t the most amazing images ever, you could tell just by looking that them that there is so much emotion attached to the photo. She has an amazing talent for capturing the right moment when someone has that distinct look on their face. I really like that she has a lot of meaning to each of her photographs and that she isn’t looking for one answer, she is really just leaving it open for the viewer to decide. I enjoyed her army portraits the most as well as some of the wrestling pics. She kind of seems little secretive, which I think also is conveyed in her pictures. All in all, not a bad photographer at all.

This is going to be a book about a full day in my life. I haven’t decided yet if I want to actually shoot it all in one day or take multiple days to shoot this project. If I take my time with it I will definitly get better photos however I feel like I would be lying if I said ‘A Day In the Life…’ and I do it over more days. That is like Jim Brandenburg taking 3 shots during his project when he was only allowed to take one a day. I want to make sure that there aren’t any faces in focus, this way the viewer can put themself in the shoes of the people being photographed. Also I want to make sure that most of the pictures are extremely close and only part of the object being photographed is in focus, so the rest of the image will be slightly blurring. I could also achieve this affect with photoshop in the post production stages of the book. The layout of most of the images are going to overlap onto both pages that way the viewer looks at the images as a whole, not just left page image and then right page image.

Roni Horn
•September 30, 2009 • Leave a CommentI wasn’t particularly found of Roni Horn. I found her as a person and her work a little dull and bland. I liked some of the ideas but to me it just didn’t seem as if she had finished them. Maybe she prefers the simplicity of things over a detailed and complicated image, but her use of repetition was slightly uncreative. I didn’t really care for her water pictures, but I thought the idea of how she displayed them in the building was kind of cool. So I guess my input would be that for everyone thing she does well I found something that I didn’t like about her. She said she wasn’t searching for water pictures, the water found her and Jim Bradenburg said he wasn’t looking for the wolves, they just found him. I found that kind of amusing that both these photographers weren’t searching for these subjects that the photograph so well, but they were always found by the subject.

I really admire Jim’s compassion for photography and nature. I grew up in the mountains where everyday beauty was all around me but it wasn’t until I moved down to San Diego did I start to realize how beautiful my home really was. I feel particularly moved by this piece and his project because I would really like to go 14 days into the wilderness of my ‘backyard’ and find the beauty, not just for myself but for everyone. It is so important that we preserve our very few natural and pristine areas. It is completely up to us to save or destroy the world.
Messing around in Photoshop
•September 23, 2009 • 1 Comment
these are some images i messed around with in photoshopp. Just playing with layers and filters. On this one I made a Sepia Color Overlay, used a Gaussian Blur, added a small Diffuse Glow and changed the contrast. I also added water ripple effect over the whole image which makes it look like a painting. Here is the original.

This is a photo i took of a flower. I did the sepia overlay again as well as the gaussian blur. But i masked the original color of the flower into the picture just for emphasis of color. i think i prefer the picture with all color but this was just to mess around.

Sally Mann

Sally Mann is definitely an interesting person. She seems a little stiff and too into her work but if she wasnt who she is, then the photographs wouldnt be this way. I have to say that I really enjoy her photos. They have a very authentic feeling to them and it reminds me of what life might have been like way back in the day. Even though the pictures are recent, her technique makes them feel like these ancient photos found in some time capsule. The portrait shots are just phenomenal, and her kids are definitely half the talent in those photos. They definitely have some outer-worldly ’intensity’ to their faces in the pictures and they seem very angelic at times and also very dark at times. All in all I liked her work, but she is little crazy.
