Research Projects

I have chosen to write about our societies current obsession with social networking sites and technology in general. It seems like no one can go longer than 2 days without any internet or texting. I know that when my internet goes out for a few mintues (due to a bad router) I get annoyed and even slightly angry. My career is going to be very much technologically based, and I will be surrounded with computers and the internet for my whole life.

After realizing all of this, I decided that I wanted to write about how obsessed just about everyone in our society is with technology and staying ‘connected’ and what kind of effect this is having on our emotions. A long time ago, my girlfriend had told me she read a paper saying that Twitter and Facebook Status Updates are actually taking away from the human emotion. The paper stated that we aren’t as emotionally responsive to stories involving people that have very serious injuries, overcoming huge feats, etc. I personally do not have a twitter, but I know a bunch of people who do and they update it with the dumbest things; such as, “just got a burrito from Santana’s!!” “@MattHartless yea that girl is way stupid.” “@garrett22 just farted on some guy lol.”

By constantly being connected with each other and hearing everyone’s emotions publicly all the time we no longer care as much about the little things, which in end is making it hard to ‘feel’ emotions for things we should. In one of the articles I read, they talked about how loneliness and boredom are closely allied. People are trained at a young age to be bored through television. TV was designed to diminish the feeling of boredom, however having nothing to do isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Our social networking sites have become our virtual images of ourselves, out there for the world to see. It is our book cover. With my research I want to find out how much we are losing or gaining from this obsession with technology.

ARTIST RESEARCH———-

I am going to be researching artist Josef Muller-Brockmann. I really like this artists style because everything has a very clean and modern aesthetic to it, however his layout use is unique.  I love how he uses the grid, but not in just a horizontal or vertical way, but he also adds the usage of diagonal lines. The piece that really got me was The Architectonic in Graphic Design poster design that he did. In that one he is using the grid however he manipulates the letter by adding a diagonal grid. I really think that his style will be perfect for this type of layout because I need a very modern and clean look to go with my technology section of my research. Also I need it to be clean so my points can be easily read and easily understood.
